Handmade Rugs in Istanbul

A rug woven by hand carries months — sometimes years — of a weaver's life in its knots. Our Sultanahmet archive gathers silk rugs from Hereke, Persian pieces from Isfahan, antique cocoon silk and natural-dye wool rugs, every one selected for how it will age, not just how it looks today.

Silk rugs

Genuine Hereke and Turkish silk — up to a million knots per square metre, with the sheen that shifts colour as you walk around it.

Wool & antique rugs

Ottoman-tradition wool, shawl-weave pieces and antique rugs whose natural dyes have mellowed into colours no modern loom can copy.

Questions, answered

What is the difference between a rug and a carpet?+

In the trade, the words are used almost interchangeably; 'rug' usually describes smaller pieces and 'carpet' larger, room-sized ones. Everything in our archive — from prayer-size silk rugs to salon carpets — is hand-knotted the same way, knot by knot.

How much does a handmade rug cost in Istanbul?+

It depends on material, knot density, age and origin. Fine wool rugs start at accessible prices, while genuine Hereke silk and antique pieces are collector-grade investments. Every piece in our shop is priced transparently and explained honestly.

Are your rugs made with natural dyes?+

Yes. The pieces we select use traditional natural dyes — madder root, indigo, walnut husk, saffron. Natural dye ages gracefully, developing the patina that makes antique rugs so valuable.

Can you help me choose a rug for my home?+

That is exactly what we do. Send us your room photos and measurements via WhatsApp, and we will suggest pieces from the archive that suit the space — with photos and videos of each rug under different light.

Do handmade rugs increase in value?+

Well-kept, genuinely hand-knotted rugs — especially natural-dye silk and documented antique pieces — hold and often increase their value over decades. A good rug is one of the few furnishings you buy once and pass on.
