The Piece
"A tree in darkness, still bearing fruit"
A bare tree rises from a near-black field, branches spreading without leaves but not without life. Deer shelter at its base; birds rest in its upper reaches. The blush rose border is unexpected and exactly right: it softens what might otherwise read as austere and turns it into something tender. At 0.17 square metres this is among the smallest pieces in the collection, yet it carries a composition that could hold a much larger surface.
