What silk does
Silk is a filament: a single continuous thread unwound from the cocoon, immensely strong for its diameter and naturally reflective. Woven into carpet, that gives two signatures nothing else can imitate. First, resolution: silk can be spun fine enough to tie hundreds of knots into a square inch, which is how a piece like Turkish Silk No. II reaches 400 knots per square inch and holds detail that reads like drawing.
Second, light. A silk pile reflects directionally, so the same carpet shifts colour as you move around it or as the day moves around the room: purplish at morning, bluish at noon, grey by dusk. The silk carpets in our archive are chosen largely for how they perform this change.
What wool does
Wool is a crimped, elastic fibre with a natural coating of lanolin. It bends and recovers, which is why a good wool carpet accepts decades of footsteps and keeps standing back up. It insulates, it quiets a room, and it takes vegetable dye into a matte depth that feels warm rather than brilliant.
Wool is the fibre of rooms that are used: it forgives grit, hides small sins and grows handsome with age. Most of the great Anatolian tradition is wool for exactly these reasons.
The blend: silk where the eye lands
Between the two sits the silk and wool blend, a deliberate division of labour. The wool carries the body of the carpet; silk is reserved for highlights, contours and details, so luminosity appears exactly where the design needs emphasis. Isfahan No. I in our archive works this way at over 350 knots per square inch, its surface matte in one light and barely luminous in another.

Choosing, honestly
Buy silk for the rooms where you will look at the carpet as much as walk on it. Buy wool for the rooms that carry your daily life. Buy a blend when you want one piece to do a measure of both. And whichever way you lean, judge the individual carpet, not the category; the collection is documented piece by piece so the fibre, density and dye of each are plainly stated, and all of it can be seen in person at our Sultanahmet showroom.
