How to buy a Turkish carpet in Istanbul

Buying Guide

Istanbul is one of the best places in the world to buy a handmade carpet, and one of the easiest places to buy badly. This guide covers what to decide before you enter a shop, what to check with your own hands, and what actually drives the price.

Decide three things before you enter a shop

The most common buying mistake has nothing to do with authenticity. It is walking in with no idea of size, and falling for a piece that will never fit the room. Measure first. Know whether you are looking for a large room-anchoring carpet, a runner, or a smaller piece that could also live on a wall.

Second, have a leaning on material. Wool is resilient and warm underfoot and suits rooms that are actually lived in. Silk carries detail and light like nothing else but belongs in calmer places. Blends sit between the two. Our comparison of silk and wool rugs goes deeper.

Third, settle a realistic range. Handmade carpets span from the price of good furniture to the price of a car, and both can be honest prices. Knowing your range keeps the conversation useful. Browsing a curated collection beforehand helps you calibrate what different levels of work look like.

Where you buy matters more than how hard you negotiate

Sultanahmet, the historic heart of the city, has sold carpets for centuries, and it holds both the finest showrooms and the fastest tourist traps, sometimes on the same street. The difference is rarely the sign outside. It is how the shop behaves once you are in.

A serious dealer unrolls many pieces without impatience, tells you what each one is made of and where it comes from, and is comfortable when you ask to see the back. You should be offered tea and time, not a countdown. If you feel rushed toward a decision, leave; the city has no shortage of carpets. Our own showroom on Divanyolu Street is a short walk from Hagia Sophia, and unhurried visits are the point of it.

How to judge a carpet with your own hands

Turn a corner over. The back of a hand-knotted carpet shows individual knots, small variations in their rows, and a pattern nearly as sharp as the front. Run your palm across the pile; good wool feels dense and springy, real silk feels cool and shifts colour as your hand changes the direction of the pile.

Look at the colours in daylight if you can. Naturally dyed carpets often show abrash, subtle horizontal bands where one dye lot ends and another begins. It is a signature of the craft, not a flaw. The full set of checks is in our guide on how to identify a handmade rug.

What actually drives the price

Five factors explain almost every honest price tag. When a dealer can walk you through them piece by piece, you are in the right shop.

The five price factors
FactorWhat it meansHow to check
MaterialSilk costs the most, then silk blends, then wool. The fibre also sets how fine the work can be.Feel the pile, look at the sheen, ask directly what it is made of.
Knot densityMore knots per square centimetre means slower weaving and finer detail.Look at the back; finer, smaller knots signal higher density.
AgeGenuine age adds value when condition holds. New is not worse, but old is rarer.Ask the age and how it is known. Vague answers are an answer too.
SizePrice scales with area, but not linearly; large fine pieces are disproportionately rare.Compare pieces of similar size when judging value.
Condition and provenanceRepairs, wear and history all move the price, in both directions.Ask about restoration. Honest shops point out repairs before you find them.

One thing a carpet is not: a financial instrument. Buy a piece because you want to live with it. If it holds or grows in value over decades, treat that as a gift, not a plan.

Getting it home

Do not let luggage logistics shrink your choice. A properly rolled and wrapped carpet travels safely by insured courier to almost anywhere in the world, and a good shop handles the export paperwork for you. We ship to over 120 countries, complimentary and fully insured; the details are on our shipping and delivery page and in our guide to shipping Turkish rugs abroad.

Questions, answered

Is bargaining expected in Istanbul carpet shops?+

Some negotiation is traditional in the bazaar, but a serious shop prices by material, knot density, age and condition, and can explain each factor. A fair price you understand is worth more than a discount you cannot verify. If a starting price drops by half within minutes, the starting price was not honest.

How do I know a carpet is actually handmade?+

Turn a corner over and look at the back. On a hand-knotted carpet you can see individual knots and the pattern reads almost as clearly as on the front. Machine-made rugs have a uniform back, often with a mesh or coating. Our guide on identifying handmade rugs covers this in detail.

Can I buy a piece after I have returned home?+

Yes. Many of our clients visit the showroom, think it over and complete the acquisition from abroad. We work by private inquiry, share detailed photographs and video of the exact piece, and ship insured to your door.

Does the price include shipping?+

At Yurdan Carpet, yes. Shipping is complimentary on all orders, fully insured with door-to-door tracking, to over 120 countries. We also offer a 30-day return policy if a piece does not feel right in your home.
